Atlas Lens Co. Introduces the Orion Series 21mm

Apr 21, 2022
Glendale, CA, April 21, 2022 – Atlas Lens Co. announces the launch of the 21mm Orion Series, the newest addition to the Orion Series of 2x anamorphic lenses – and the world’s widest front anamorphic cinema lens in production.

The Orion 21mm offers a 124º horizontal field-of-view, the widest horizontal field-of-view of any front anamorphic Cinemascope format 35mm motion picture camera lens ever.

The Orion 21mm represents a previously unattainable wide-angle anamorphic field of view using a front anamorphic system. The result: A pleasing level of character and distortion in a lightweight and compact form that will not encumber cinematographers and camera operators.

Features and Specifications. The Atlas Orion 21mm is optimized for use with both film and digital sensors and offers:

  • Low distortion for an incredibly wide lens
  • 124º horizontal field-of-view with 2x anamorphic squeeze
  • 18” (1.5’) close focus
  • Covers traditional anamorphic 4:3 film and digital sensor formats up to 24.89mm x 18.66mm and covers full-frame formats edge-to-edge with Atlas 1.6x LF Extender

The exceptional optical performance, color, and clarity with a vintage geometric personality of the Orion 21mm also comes with all the signature Orion Series vintage characteristics: painterly waterfall bokeh, dynamic streak flares, pleasing barrel distortion, disproportionate perspective magnification, pleasant spherical aberration when wide open, and gentle contrast.

The Orion 21mm’s modern mechanical design also provides many on-set conveniences and comes standard with all Orion Series lenses: Fast T2 aperture with crisp flat-field performance when stopped down to a T2.8 or more, unified focus and iris position reduces the need for adjustment when switching focal lengths, and a modern, mechanically dependable design and robust build quality.

The Orion 21mm is the 8th addition to the Orion Series family of lenses, now ranging from 21mm to 100mm. This expansive lineup provides filmmakers with more options for their cinematic toolkit and creative image-making across different looks and shooting scenarios.

Availability. The Orion 21mm is scheduled to be released in 2H 2022, with order information currently available only to Orion 25mm preorder holders. The Orion 21mm is available for in-person demos at the NAB Show in Las Vegas from April 24-27, 2022 or the Atlas HQ in Glendale, CA by appointment only.
